Through Open University, you can take space-available classes in Africana Studies at the discipline’s birthplace, without formal admission to SF State.

Birthplace of Black Studies

Black Studies was born at SF State, through the 1968 - 1969 strike, led by the Black Students Union and the Third World Liberation Front, in a struggle for civil rights, equity and social justice. Over 50 years later, the College of Ethnic Studies and Africana Studies proudly remain at their historic home.

Summer Classes in Africana Studies

The College of Ethnic Studies is offering a classes in Africana Studies (AFRS) this summer. All classes are offered online.
