Armin Akhavan’s academic journey spans two continents, four languages, and several scientific pursuits. After earning his doctoral degree at McGill University, he transitioned to post-doctoral research at UCSF. Since 2013, Prof. Akhavan has been an integral part of the Department of Biology and the Post-Bac Program at SF State. During the ensuing years, he has taught, coordinated and developed a variety of lower- and upper-division courses, including Biology of Aging and Cancer Biology.

At SF State, Professor Akhavan enjoys the challenge of engaging both undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and post-baccalaureate learners of varying academic qualifications. His commitment to equity and adaptable teaching methods ensures that every student thrives. For example, he makes extensive use of the whiteboard knowing that his reduced pace allows students time to not only digest the material but to ask thoughtful questions.

Professor Akhavan is dedicated to helping his students learn about their biology and physiology and to provide them with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about their health. He feels satisfied and humbled when former students connect with him to share their achievements since graduating from the program. He believes that his most important contribution to society will be through his students.
