Amichai Lyons (he/him/his)
M.S.
Faculty Lecturer
As a competitive athlete in high school and college, Amichai Lyons harbored a natural curiosity about the intricacies of the human body. His interest led him to pursue a master’s degree in Kinesiology, specializing in Exercise Physiology at SF State. He became a certified Exercise Physiologist and gained practical experience by working in a clinic for a year.
Recognizing that he much preferred academia, Professor Lyons returned to SF State as a full-time instructor. He already had over a decade of diverse teaching experiences. Prior to earning his master’s degree, he taught students on the autism spectrum and also taught math and science at the high school level. He started a math tutoring company after observing learning deficits in students struggling with distance learning during COVID. As a graduate teaching assistant, Prof. Lyons further developed his passion for supporting and mentoring students. Since then, he has taught several different courses, including Physiology and Anatomy, at SF State. He has been an instructor for the Pre-Health Post-Bac Program since 2020.
Professor Lyons’ experiences have helped him create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. His personal and clinical insights have enriched his teaching, allowing him to bring real-world examples into the classroom. He enjoys breaking down intricate topics into digestible chunks. Witnessing those “light bulb” moments when students grasp challenging concepts is incredibly rewarding for him. Professor Lyons appreciates the unique qualities of post-bac students – they are sincere, mature and high-performing individuals. He feels fulfilled knowing that he is not just imparting knowledge but also serving as a springboard for their careers in the health professions.
When he is not on campus, Professor Lyons spends time with his family, creates music and continues to be engaged in athletics. Over the past three years, he has developed a passion for upcycling; he wears the clothes that he has designed and created.
