Yoko Toriyabe is an SF State alumna. She earned her M.S. Chemistry here. As a student, her research project involved the design and synthesis of small molecule inhibitors of prostate cancer. Professor Toriyabe has been teaching since 2006 and is an instructor for the Chemistry Department as well as for the Post-Bac Program. She employs a student-centered learning approach, emphasizing group work and interactive participation during lectures. She encourages students to reflect on their work and generally holds a mid-semester review where she and her students discuss their path towards academic success.

Professor Toriyabe teaches General Chemistry in the Post-Bac Program. She appreciates the unique backgrounds of post-bac students and believes that their diverse experiences inspire her to continuously improve her teaching style.

Outside of academia, Professor Toriyabe enjoys art and music. She loves to play the traditional Japanese guitar called "shamisen," and is learning Ikebana, the Japanese-style flower arrangement.
