EAP: Health Insurance

American Language Institute (ALI) F-1 visa status students must have health insurance during the entire semester. ALI students on F-1 visa are required to buy the ALI-sponsored health insurance. Other health insurance plans will not be accepted. Students on a government-sponsored scholarship which provides compatible insurance coverage as a part of the sponsorship are exempt from this policy.

How to Buy Insurance

Summer 2024 Insurance Cost

  • Summer 2024: 5/17 - 8/15 ($612)
  • Summer A 2024: 5/17 - 7/3 ($306)
  • Summer B 2024: 7/2 - 8/15 ($306)

How to Enroll

  1. Go to Academic Health Plans website for SF State
  2. Click Begin Enrollment
  3. Click the drop-down menu for American Language Institute
  4. Click the Click Here to Enroll button
  5. Enter your SF State Email address, and the school's name will be automatically generated.
  6. Click Next
  7. Log in
    • If students have not created an account under Academic Health Plans, click Create one now!
    • When creating an account, 
      • All current international students should choose "American Language Institute"
      • Provide their U.S. address if they have one, otherwise use the SF State address (1600 Holloway Ave., HUM 101, San Francisco, CA 94132)
      • A parent's email is not required.
      • Once all sections are complete, click the Create Account button. An email will be sent to our SF State email to verify their account.
      • Find the AHP email within the SF State email inbox (check the junk folder as well)
      • Once you have verified your email, you will be directed to a new screen to create your password.
      • Once your password is created, you will return to the main page to log in to your account.
  8. Click the I want to Enroll button.
  9. Enter the estimated number of units you plan to enroll in for the upcoming semester.
    • This does not apply to ALI students, but if cannot be left blank enter 6.
  10. Review the information and click each box to confirm you understand and meet the eligibility requirements.
  11. Click Confirm
  12. Click the plan option you wish to purchase
  13. Click Proceed to Checkout
  14. Click on the chosen plan
  15. Click One-time Pay
  16. Click on the payment method.
    • Payment by credit card has additional charges of 3% credit card fee per transaction.
    • Payment by debit card or an ACH payment does not have additional charges. ACH payment means an electronic fund transfer from a U.S. bank
  17. Enter payment information
  18. Click Pay to complete the purchase.

The insurance company for the 2023 - 2024 academic year is GeoBlue.

You will receive a welcome email from GeoBlue a few days before the first day of the insurance plan. You will not receive insurance cards by mail. The welcome email will contain instructions to create an account at GeoBlue Student Insurance's website and download insurance card. Print and carry the insurance card at all times.

Deadline to buy health insurance is May 16, 2024 for the Summer and Summer A session, and June 27, 2024 for the Summer B session.
